Après des études de biologie moléculaire à l’Université de Montpellier, Xavier Le Roy travaille comme artiste depuis 1991. En 2018 il est professeur à l'institut des études du théâtre appliquées de Giessen (Allemagne). Il débute comme interprète avec divers groupes et chorégraphes. De 1996 à 2003, il est artiste en résidence au Podewil à Berlin. En 2007 et 2008, il est artiste associé au Centre National Chorégraphique de Montpellier. En 2010, il est artiste en résidence au MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) dans le cadre du programme Art Culture and Technology (Cambridge, USA). Fin 2012, il débute une résidence de 3 ans au Théâtre de la Cité Internationale de Paris.
Depuis 1994 il développe des travaux soli : "Self Unfinished" (1998), "Produit de Circonstances" (1999), "Giszelle" (2001) en collaboration avec Eszter Salamon, "Le Sacre du Printemps " (2007), "Produit d'autres circonstances" (2009) et  "Sans titre" (2014).


Parallèlement, il initie des projets explorant les modes de production et de collaboration constitutives du travail de groupe: "E.X.T.E.N.S.I.O.N.S." (1999-2000), "Project" (2003) et "6 Mois 1 Lieu" (2008), "low pieces" (2011).

Ses travaux produisent des situations qui interrogent, entre autres, les relations spectateurs et performers et tentent de transformer ou reconfigurer les dichotomies telles que: objet/sujet, animal / humain, machine/humain, nature/culture, public/privé, forme/informe.
Une partie de ses recherches se développe sous forme de travaux  réalisés spécifiquement pour des espaces d’exposition : "production" (2010-2011) développée avec Marten Spangberg dans le cadre de l'exposition "MOVE: Choreographing You", "Rétrospective" réalisé pour la Fondation Antoni Tapiès à Barcelone (2012), "Untitled"  (2012) pour l'exposition 12 Rooms, "Titre Provisoire, 2015" créé à Sydney pour le John Kaldor Public Art Project, "For The Unfaithful Replica" en collaboration avec Scarlet Yu au CA2M de Madrid en 2016.

 

En 2017 avec l'Ensemble Issho Ni ils créent pour l'Ensemble Modern de Francfort, l'exposition "Haben Sie "Modern" Gesagt?",  et avec Scarlet Yu "Still Untitled" une pièce pour espace public en réponse à la comande de Skulptur Projekte Münster - 2017.

 

En 2021, ils reprennent la forme de ce travail pour créer "Still in Hongkong" dans le cadre de l’exposition "Trust and Confusion" au Taikwun Contemporary Art Center à Hong Kong et en 2022 "Stil (Life) ln Taipei" pour l’ouverture de Taipei Performing Art Center.


En 2018 sur l'invitation de La Biennale di Venezia il créé une nouvelle version de la pièce "Le Sacre du Printemps " pour 3 interprètes, pièce qu’il continuera de travailler en 2020 à Venise avec 11 interprètes de la Biennale College Danzatori lors de La Biennale Danza, puis en 2022 à Berlin en collaboration avec Saša Asentić avec notamment des artistes malentendants. Cette dernière version du Sacre du Printemps, sera la poursuite d’un travail autour de la question de « normes » et de la place du handicap dans nos sociétés, et fait suite à la collaboration avec avec Dalibor Šandor et le groupe Per.Art. pour créer « We are not monsters » 2020-2021.
